Hi everyone. I lot of you know me already from the brain cancer forum. Unfortunately we have just found out that Andrews mother has bladder cancer. She has just got back from Brisbane (a few thousand KMs away) after having tumour removed. We find out next week all test results to organise the next stage of treatment. All we know is that it is invasive cancer at this stage. I will now have to learn all I can about this disease after having learnt alot about brain cancer. Anyone with any knowledge please let me know. I will be able to shed some more light on things once we get all results in. Love to all.

Dear Jen
I am so very sorry to hear about your MIL's Cancer diagnosis. I pray the surgery has been successful in removing the cancer completely & then I assume chemo & radiotherapy will follow? Will she be able to have these treatments up in Nth Qld, it would be a terrible drain on her & you all if she had to travel back to Brisneyland for follow up treatments!

Oh Jen, I am so sorry about Andrew's mother! What a load your family is having to carry. I will learn about Bladder Cancer with you  .

Hi all. I just started a new topic and realised I had one going already. Anyway - thank goodness for cut and paste.. As some of you already know my MIl was diagnosed with bladder cancer. She started with blood in her urine back in April. After serveral test they sent her down to Brisbane for surgery to remove tumour, she opted to go under general anesthetic for this procedure. Apparently you can have an epidural but as she had heard scary stories about this (back problems afterwards) she went for the knock me out way. She stayed 3 days (I think) in hospital - result cancer. Her and my husband went back down to Brisbane last Wednesday 16/07 and she went in for surgery Friday. She was on a liquid diet from Wednesday. Operation started early Fri morning and she finally got into ICU around 5:00pm Fri afternoon. Yesterday (Saturday) afternoon she was transferred back to the ward, when Andrew visited her the nurses kicked him out as her blood pressure had dropped really low. After they talked to the drs they pumped her with antibiotics and some other stuff (not sure what it is yet). Andrew (my husband) reported after seeing her that she is feeling fantastic, they have given her an epidural (not sure what she thinks of that - due to her earlier fears, but I'm sure that she won't want to give it up too soon). They also have a machine massaging her legs (to help with blood flow I believe). All this is going to stop today sometime (well the epidural at least ) and then I would think reality will hit in a very painful way. The operation was to take out her bladder and use part of her bowel to attach a bag on the outside of her. She is 70 years of age and quite a big lady. She had lost a fair bit of weight (due to dieting) before she was diagnosed but still a bit of a worry for surgeons as they said they have to attach part of her bowel through the fat layer to exit the outside of her stomach and the more fat there is the harder it is. We'll hope and pray that it all goes well. I will keep you up to date as I hear things from hubby. It is hard being away from them (Brisbane is a about 1700 KMs from where I am, but that's the price we pay for living in paradise up here in sunny Cairns (Far North Tropical part of Australia). I think my brain isn't working to well this morning. This is about the 3rd or 4th time I've edited this post. The surgeon reported that everything around bladder looks good but we will wait for results to be sure that cancer hasn't spread.

Update time.... MIL is still in hospital. After her initial feeling of wellness she hit rock bottom. All was going well until one night she apparently was crippled over with pain, vomiting all night long and high temp. When Andrew saw her the next day she told him she thought that was the end and she was going to die (she is a pretty tough lady so that was saying something) Drs worked out that her bowels had shut down and they put a tube down to pump all the bile out of her stomach. I can't remember the figures but what a normal person has in their stomach she had quadruple or more in hers. She still has this tube and after some pretty bad days she is now feeling a lot more comfortable. Anyway she has changed a couple of bags by herself, with very shaking hands and a lot of nervousness but she said it wasn't that bad. They did a scan using a dye to make sure everything was intact and nothing was leaking. Got the OK today and apparently everything is going well. They got the pathology results back as well and they have told her that she has cancer in her lympth nodes (yep - I've been swearing like a trooper) anyway they said they will talk to her about treatment in 1 to 2 months as they said there is no way she would be able to handle chemo at this stage. Jen, thank you for the update on you MIL. I am so sorry she had cancer. I cannot imagine how overwhelmed you and Andrew must be.
You, Andrew, and his mother continue in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi all. Latest update - MIL is still in hospital - 5 weeks tomorrow. I went down to Brisbane to surprise Andrew and is mum last Saturday, BOY what a surprise they got - it was great. Anyway MIL has had a lot of up and down days. She kept getting some severe pain which after lots of different tests over a week they worked out that she had an abcyst in the site of one of her drains that they had taken out earlier - bad news is they didn't pick it up until it had burst, so on Sundary night she went back in for surgery to take away quite a bit of dead tissue and infection (they had explained that the antibiotics that they had been giving her would not circulate around the area where there was no blood flow). I just hear that she has had her first meals today in 5 weeks. They had been giving her a feed bag (stuff they put through what they call a pick line). Because they couldn't close the wound where they took out the infection they have been packing every day (ouch!!). Apparently tomorrow they are going to start using a vacuum seal bandage so they don't have to pack it anymore. Anyway things are starting to look like they are going in the right direction and hopefully she will be out of hospital soon. The bad news is once she has recovered from all of this she will have to start chemo treatment to fight the cancer that is in her lymph nodes. I am counting down the days until they are back up here.
