Hi,
Does anyone know the odds of both parents having cancer at the same time? My dad was just diagnosed last week with small cell lung cancer and my mom is in the process of being diagnosed with some type of cancer (has spot on her left lung - we get the biopsy and PET scan results tomorrow).
I hate cancer.
Thanks,
Kristi |

Kristy I don't know the odds but wanted to offer some support and say that I really hate cancer too. Praying that the outcome of your parents situation is not a bad one.
Hang in there |

Dear Kristi
I'm so sorry to read this update on your family-your Mum & Dad! I don't know the odds but would hazard a guess that they're high! Is there a history of cancer on either side of your parent's families? This may effect their chances too?
My prayers & thoughts are with you all. Please keep us updated!
God bless
Cheers, Angie. _________________ Brother has GBMIV

Kristi, I do not know what the odds are of both parents having cancer. My parents both died of cancer... but very different cancers and just over 8 years apart. Obviously, there might be some environmental factors that could cause multiple people to have cancer at the same time. Say, your parent's back yard boarded on a nuclear or other carcinogenic chemicals waste dump. I do not mean to make light of your situation. I just mean to point out that their might be some factors in common to both of your parents that would put both of them at a higher than normal risk of cancer.
You and your parents are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

My parents are former smokers. My mom quit smoking in August 1990 ad my dad in Feb. 1993. My mom smoked for 28 years and my dad for 40 years.
We do have some cancer within the family. My dad's dad had throat cancer and various skin cancers. He died of respiratory issues in July 1991. He outlived his brothers and he was in the poorest health. My dad's oldest sister had breast cancer in early 1997. She had a mastectomy and took Tamoxifen for five years. I had a cousin on my dad's side who had cervical cancer a number of years ago.
As far as the neighborhood goes, our neighbor behind us was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. We have another neighbor two doors down that was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 1998. My backyard is not a toxic waste dump.

I asked the oncologist about my parents getting cancer at the same time. He said it is just bad luck. He's had six couples be diagnosed with cancer at the same time in his practice.
