Hi,

I'm having a radical prostatectomy next Tuesday and my wife plans to stay at the hospital for the three days I will be inpatient. We live 1:45 from the hospital so she won't consider commuting. Anyone have any strategies for helping her/us cope with the difficulties of such a situation? I worry about her as I will be asleep most of the time...

Hi, Gary - I hope all goes well.

The essential thing for your wife to remember is that there are long periods when she will have nothing specific to do, so she should have with her something mindless to keep her occupied - knitting, embroidery, or whatever. She must also get out of the hospital into the fresh air at least twice in the day. It will do her more good to take a short walk than to sit and worry.

Others will have ideas but these are the two my mother and I found essential when my father was in hospital.

Thank you Vee. I am compiling a list of things to keep her busy. I'm thinking about enlisting the hospital staff to keep her occupied as well.
