I am a 73 yr old male, diagnosed with non small cell cancer in the extreme upper portion of my right middle lobe 3 weeks ago. In 1996 I had the same type of cancer in the upper right lobe and a lobectomy was performed. I have had a cat scan, a Pet scan and a Bronchoscopy. The final diagnosis is that the cancer has not spread form its original site. It is completely enclosed.
My surgeon says he cannot operate because he would have to remove the 2 remaining lobes on my right side and my lung function test shows I would not be able to function with just 1/2 of my lungs. His reason for removing the bottom lobe is that it would not function in all that empty space.
My question is why can't they just remove the tumor before it spreads and then put me on Chemotherapy or radiation?

I am sure that you will get some good medical information from either or both Dr.s Jay and Leo. I only wanted to add my support. You are in the middle of gathering very important information. I wish for you to keep doing all the other important things as well; sleep and eat well, think positive thoughts, and get all the support for youself that you can! I give you my very best.

Sincerely Yours,

Pat

Dear Sir,

What happens is that if your pulmonary function is not very good, if you remove more lung tissue it might not be enough to sustain life. There are ways to calculate how much impact removing part of the lung would cause on breathing.

best regards,
Leo
