My doctor ordered a CT scan to look for possible brain abnormalities; however, I'm wondering if an MRI couldn't do the same job? Is one better than the other as a diagnostic tool? I read that CT is better for looking at bones.

Thanks,

Hi three4rd, the doctors usually start with a CT... I think because it is more available, faster, and cheaper (?). An MRI can show more detailed information about the size, shape, and location of the cancer... if there is one. And it tends to pick up small cancers better. However, a CT will detect a cancer that is large enough to be causing any symptoms so you should be OK with a CT for now. If your medical team finds something on the CT, they will probably order an MRI.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

The advantage to using MRI scans to detect tumors is that they provide images in multiple planes thus being able to better identify any tumors. MRI scans are also very accurate in detecting enlargement of mediastinal lymph nodes
