I had some questions so I thought I would try posting them here. My grandfather has a tumor that is in between his stomach and pancreas- so it is not really any certain type of cancer. They were holding off on surgery bc it's a major operation, a lot of people they say don't even do it, but my grandpa is tough and won't allow himself to give up. Radiation and chemo were never an option, but they upped his dosage of medicine he was taking (which basically eliminated his colon cancer he had before). He was 4 years cancer free then this. Now his tumor has grown, he has surgery on Monday. He is very hopeful, but I wonder what really the odds are I guess. Anything can happen and he has the right attitude about it, but I guess I would like to know what to be prepared for if anyone has been through similar experiences, both good and bad. Thanks.

Dear Kristy,

Thanks for posting. It is very hard to tell what the risks of surgery are, knowing what you've told me. First of all, I think the major problem here is that they do not know what type of cancer this is (maybe it is not even cancer, maybe it is an infection). Knowing the type of cancer would guide further treatment. Having stomach cancer, for example, is very different from having pancreatic cancer, in terms of treatment options.

So the best for now is not to try to imagine all the complications and problems that may arise, but to focus on success and how the surgical findings are going to affect the next steps. If the team has done their best to figure this out and this is their best plan, it is off your or his hands, and now it is just a matter of time to know how to proceed after the surgery.

best regards,
Leo
