Hello,

I have been diagnosed, at the VA hospital, La Jolla CA, with a squemous hypophargeal cancer (1.2cm) T1 near the base of my tongue. I have been given two Tx options: Radiation x 38, covering an area from the lower jaw down to the clavicle. This Tx will result in a permanent dry-mouth condition, which will lead to removal of all teeth and preclude the wearing of dentures. The second option is surgery; The procedure would require removal of all lymph glands from the ear down to the clavicle, require a week stay in hospital with feeding and breathing tube and run the risk of damaging control of the facial muscles wherein smiling is out and drooling is in.

I am a (poor) 60 yr old male looking to manage this disease with as little trauma and risk as possible. So far, Tx looks like killing a gnat with a sledgehammer. What are you thoughts and opinion?

Sincerely,
William Reid

Hi William.

please dont consider surgery without a second opinion, my husband has been through chemo and radio and he hasnt got dry mouth and hasnt lost his teeth yet! and you are T1 ?? my husband was T3 please get a second opinion, I did private message you before I saw the details on this posting as you didnt give me so much detail as is written here.

My husbands primary care physician has just seen a 76 year old man recover from this and his lymph glands were infected too.

I can say he was without side effects during treatment, and some were servere but surgery is a drastic measure
Talk to me please
