My partner's mother was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last spring. She did chemo and radiation and it seemed to work for about six months but now it has returned. We live on the West Coast while his parents and rest of the family are on the East Coast. What I am struggling with is how to be supportive to my partner as he deals with the fear and grief over his mother. If I try to be hopeful with him I end up sounding trite. We are generally great at communicating with each other but I find myself at a loss for words to console him at this time. His mother's prognosis appears to be grim. I simply don't know what he needs to hear from me. Or if I just need to "be there" which I always am. I just want to be as comforting as possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
