my 72 year old mother-in-law has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. she is having surgery this wednesday(9/19/07). based on what the ct scan shows she will have laprascopic surgery or if it has spread the will have to open her up. has anyone out there been diagnosed with GIST cancer?

I am so sorry about your mother-in-laws diagnosis. I hope the surgery went well. Could you update us on her condition now that the surgery is over?

Her surgery went great. They were able to do laprascopic (sp?) surgery. the dr removed the tumor from her stomach. from everything the surgeon saw he believes he got it all. She will be going to an oncologist to have a pet scan done just for peace of mind.

Some slightly good news unmongst the bad. Confused

I hope the Dr did get it all, and any other future treatments are painless and quick.

Please stay in touch with how things are going.

cschrimsher, that you for the wonderful update. I am glad that they were able to do the surgery laprascopically. That is so much easier on the patient! I hope that she does not need any further treatments. However, do not be surprised if the oncologist wants to give her some chemotherapy just to be sure that she does not get any metastatic growths that are too small to be detected now... even by PET scan.

I continue to think about and pray for your mother-in-law.
