Unbelievable! I just got back from getting my dad's prescription for Nexavar. We're in the process of getting it shipped from ? not sure what company...but the nurse @ the oncology clinic said the copayment could be in the thousands! Fortunately there seems to be a program to help with this expense. My poor Dad was waiting to start this medicine. As much as he says he's at peace with his prognosis, it breaks my heart to see how eager he is to start taking this medication..he knows it will help keep him with us longer. I don't want to ask God why, but it's hard not to. |

Cisco's Daughter, how is your father doing? Did you get the drug assistance you needed to buy the Nexavar? Let us know how things are going with how and your father.
I still think about and pray for you and your father. _________________ Jim

| Oh, thank you for your kind words. I've been so upset over this whole situtation. We have not been able to get help for this. Ironically, if my dad didn't have insurance he would have more help. We just cannot afford the copay. So my dad is quietly dying, with no hope of trying this wonderful drug that would give him more time to survive. It breaks my heart, like you cannot imagine. |

Cisco's Daughter, it breaks my heart too to hear that your father is having to do without medication because he does not qualify for help paying is copay. Our medical system really stinks. I know the drug companies spend years on hundred of thousand of dollars developing these medications. But still...
I am in a similar although not as bad of a situation. My medicine's cost more than I can afford and my application for assistance was also denied for the same reason. I do not spend thousands of dollars for chemo but I would have to spend over $300 per month... that is my copay not the actual cost of the medicines. However, I have had to go to my doctor's and ask them for free samples and if there is not something cheaper that they can prescribe. I am on the cheaper medication but it is not the best. I have had seizures on this medication before. As it is, I spend over $150 per month on medication. That doesn't sound like a lot but it is 10% of my monthly income so it hurt to have to pay that much. I sometimes have to cut corners with other expenses... use fans rather than the air conditioner during the summer and space heaters rather than the central heater during the winter for example. I do not know what I would do if I really had to spend $$$$ on medication.
My heart breaks for your father but thank you for the update. Your father has been in my prayers since your first post about his cancer. He will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.
I said this before just this morning... I HATE CANCER. _________________ Jim

Cisco's Daughter, Hi
It's so sad that we have no help to treat Cancer. We pay alot in taxes etc, to help find cures- but what about the ones living the fight. Grrrrr-
IAM very lucky- We Aussies have alot of help, we have treatment even if not in a health fund (insurance),(about 10% goes to public health) _ALTHOIGH our prime minister is looking to change this.....We do however have limited choices. Although Extra cost, treatment, or expensive drugs we do have to pay more. But so much more better than you guys.
I hope you Dad gets what he needs. Maybe a positive attitude will help- who says this new drug will help? He might lose time? Or value of life? Or he might grow a 3rd arm or something Sometimes a Laugh is all you've got.
Please keep in touch and let us know how it goes. Thinking of you and your Family.

Hi Cisco's daughter,
I certainly know how you feel! We also had problems getting the Nexavar medication for my dad, but when we finally did receive it in the mail, it was already too late...............about a week too late so we will never know how he would've responded to the treatment.
We first heard about Nexavar from my dad's oncologist who had us complete a form to enroll in the medication program and then he submitted the form to my dad's health insurance. Of course, his health insurance came back with a denial and it would've cost us thousands of dollars out of pocket. I was not willing to give up and enlisted the help of the Department of Managed Health Care and with their assistance, his insurance overturned the denial and approved the medication. Unfortunately, my dad did not survive long enough to even try the medication. I don't know about your insurance situation, but check out the Department of Managed Health Care website (www.dmhc.ca.gov) and see what they can do for you. You can either contact them directly or email them or you can do what I did, complete a complaint form and fax it to the Dept. for Expedited Review. In any case, call them and see if they can help............at least you know you've done your best and exhausted all possibilities. Good luck and I certainly hope for the best!
