Hi Petrit, I am so sorry about your father's cancer! I had an astrocytoma grade II in 1992 which recurred in 2005 but was diagnosed as an oligodedroglioma grade III... same family of cancers. I have never taken Temodol. Back when I took chemo that gold standard was PCV (CCNU) and that is what I took. Now, the gold standard is Temodol. You live in a poor country but if Temodol is available to your father he is better off than many other counties. In the UK Temodol has only recently become available.

How is your father recovering from his surgery? I hope he has a full recovery and has only minimal problems with the chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Most of the time chemotherapy (an kind) and radiation start at the same time... after the patient has had some time to recover from surgery. I do not know which would come first if you had to make a choice. Sorry for all the problems you are facing with getting treatment for your father.

Hi Petrit

When my father had his treatment he had temodol ( in lower doses) and radiation for 6 weeks. He took temodol every day and had radiation 5 dasy a week for the 6 weeks. The temodol is taken in tablet form so you can be at home ( no need for travel). He then had a break of 6 weeks and was scheduled to start temodol in higher doses for 6 months ( 5 days of chemo and then 3 weeks off). From most of the stories I have read or heard this seems to be the method at the moment.

Good luck with the treatment
Regards
Karen

hello Karen

Thanks for your help. Over here they advised me to start radiation for 6 weeks after that break for a month , then to start with temodal for 6 weeks. Maybe they said because temodal is quite expensive and we have to pay ourself.

Let me know how is your father and how did he cope with radiation and temodal at same time .

many thanks

Hi Petrit

Unfortunately my father did not cope well with the radiotherapy/chemo combination treatment. He developed all kinds of complications and the radio damaged lots of good tissue as well. My dad had a very aggressive illness ( arent they all!). He was diagnosed March 9th 2007with GBM 4. At the time of diagnosis tumour was the size of a lemon. He had surgery March 10th, started chemo/radio 3 weeks later ( for a 6 week course). 2 weeks after this finished he had a seizure and everything went downhill from there. he passed away 4th August 2007, just less than 5 months from diagnosis. He was 66.

Drs said he was one of the few who had a bad reaction to the treatment. Her never got to even have the heavy doses of chemo as he was not strong enough and would not have coped with it.

My understanding from talking to all the Drs involved is that they give the radio and chemo at the same time time as the tumour is so aggressive that they try to maximise the impact and arrest the growth of the tumour as soon as they can.

How is your dad going at the moment? Keep in touch

regards
Karen

Karen

I feel for you, my dad was diagnosed in Feb, and is still fighting it. although the tumor has taken it's toll. things are at a stand off now. my dad has improved slightly, but the doctors said some time ago "there is nothing more we can do".

You never know if fighting it is a good thing. some of the stuff my dad is going through at present is really not pretty. you always "hope" for that cure from left field.

my sympathies go out to you.

Hi petrit, I am so sorry to hear about your father. My partner had the same treatment as described by Karen (Kashrel) he coped quite well but was sensitive to Temodal so they kept him on a low dose for the 6mths. The Drs said, in there opinion, Temodal should be given while receiving radiation treatment but obviously not in all cases. I feel very lucky and guilty, that here in Australia we can recieve treatment and medications with next to no cost. It must be very hard for you to have to travel so far and try and decide what to do and also have the money to do it. We also had to travel quite some distance and to quite a few different hospitals, the worst part is being away from family and friends in what is the worst time of your lives. I hope everything goes as well as possible and that things can change in your country to help people in the same situation as you and your father. My thoughts are with you. Love to all. Jen

welcome Petrit, I hope all is going as well as can be. You sound like a very caring and determed person, with alot of hard times and frustration along the way.

This shows me how much we forget we are 'lucky' when something so bad happens to us. I can't imagine even thinking of trying to work out what is best, travel and be strong- BUT you are doing it.

Keep up the strength and i'll be thinking of you and your Father. Keep in touch

Petrit, this is the first time I have heard of temonat. I did a google search and did find commercial sites for it but on my major cancer and medicine sites I came up empty. Sorry. If you find out anything, let us know.
