Hello,

My aunt who is 56 was diangosed with small cell lung cancer in October that had metasized to her brain. She had radiation in the brain and has been on chemo. They took her off since she is not responding and now has 3 new spots on the lung and started her on terceva. Will this help the cancer in her brain? Are there other treatments available? What is a likely prognosis? Will she ever be free of cancer? Help! I don't think that she is understanding the full scope of the problem or is just not telling us the full story.

Dear Meredith,

Thanks for posting. Small cell lung cancer is unfortunately a very difficult one to treat. I am sorry to say that the prognosis is not good. While Tarceva may help some, I find it difficult that it will completely cure her. There are other things that could be tried, but really none of them are very good at treating this disease. You can certainly talk to her doctors and herself about all this and see what she wants/expects

best regards,
Leo

Hi Meredith,

My mom has small cell lung cancer and it has spread to different parts of her body. We weren't given an exact prognosis but the doctor has only given us "weeks." I am sorry to hear about your aunt but from the research that I have done personally as well as my personal experiences, small cell lung cancer is very hard to beat if at all. The likelihood of small cell lung cancer spreading to the brain is very high and we had to do a radiation treatment to her head as a preventative treatment back in her early stage. She is now in a later more advanced stage and it has spread to her liver, abdomen and bone. Right now, your aunt needs you to be there for her. She is going through a lot right now. Some things to be watchful of is her attitude and moods. My mom is very moody (result of pain and constant fatigue). The best thing you can do for her and yourself is to spend some time with her. Good luck.

Take care,

Paul
