I asked my surgeon how many lymph nodes a normal person has under their arm....he does only breast surgeries....he told me that it varies from person to person. He siad the lowest amount he had found had been 7 and the highest amount had been 48. He also told me that they remove only what they can get to easily, there are some higher up in the armpit that are in the muscle that they cannot get to. Anyway, I just thought you might find this interesting. _________________ Shelly

Shawn, you are doing exactly the right thing. Encourage her to see an onc. She needs a person who has knowledge in each area -- surgery, chemo, radiation. In other words it takes a team because each person keeps up to date on their own specialty. Most surgeons will know their specialty is surgery and then after surgery suggest you go to a onc for chemo consultation and radiologist onc. for radiology consultation. Its extremely important that the team (which includes your mom and your family) all work together.
Can you suggest to her that she join us in this forum to get support from a great group of ladies who have been there/done that and this forum also has two doctors who can answer her/your questions who are in the field of breast cancer treatment from a radiation/oncologist point of view? Its important that she understand its OK to get second opinions and its vital to get to where the best treatment is possible in your area.

It just depends on the person. The docs remove a fat pad and different women have different amounts of lymph nodes in that fat pad section. My surgeon told me there could be 80...just depends. When I had my prophylactic mastectomy, there was not even one lymph node in any of the breast tissue, where as on the cancer side, there were 3 sentinal nodes. There were only 17 nodes in the fat pad that was removed from under my arm. Both sentinal nodes and one node in the pad were positive. Sending prayers. _________________ Where is the cure???

Hey ladies,

Mom goes wednesday to her Dr. I was talking to her and my dad the other day and they said that her Dr. will turn her over to an oncologist after this meeting. I was very glad to here that. I will post after her appt. and let you know what is going on. Again, thank you! |

Hi Shawn. My mom was also just diagnosed with breast cancer. They say so far it is invasive ductal carcinoma. It was so hard finding this out. I am very close to my mom. She is only 44 years old and I am 19.
How is your mom doing now? I hope good. How did the surgery go? They are talking about doing a masectomy on my mom. Please let me know how she is doing. I know exactly what you are going through.
You can also email me if you'd like sweetieds85@hotmail.com
