Crying or Very sad

Hi Newbie here needing some support please.

My lovely mother-in-law was told on wednesday last week that there is a 95% chance she has bowel cancer. She had a scan on tuesday and we was told on wednesday by the consultant that she would need a ct scan and a endoscopy (sorry about spelling Dyslexic) as a matter of urgency. It is monday now and no appointments. I have phoned the consultants secretary this morning and she chased it up for me and the departments have said " they have recieved the forms and are assessing them for urgency and we will be contaced shortly by phone" so still no appintment. I have phoned our doctors secretary and she is chaising it up as I type.

This is devistating all of us especially my mum-in-law, it is like mental cruelty waiting for appointments etc and knowing we will no nothing for two weeks. We wont know until then if it's terminal, treatable or at what stage it is at.

We don't know what to do or how to help, Its just a living nightmare waiting and waiting.

I have two children with special needs, my husband his brother and wife all work and I need to know appointment times and dates to arrange for my children to be picked up so I can sort out getting my mum-in-law to her appointments. This is so upsetting and we are so , so scared.

I am so sorry about all of this, I just needed to tell someone who knows how we feel. We are so scared.

Many, many thanks to you all xxx

Don't apologise - it's good to have somewhere to vent when you are in this kind of situation. It is so hard, dealing with the bureaucracy in hospitals when all you want is to be seen and be dealt with. Please, don't be frightened of the word "terminal". Technically, cancer is "terminal" - but the termination can be decades away. The important things are how treatable the problem is and how it will be treated.

You seem to have a good grasp of the need to keep pushing the medical services - keep at it! I would talk to your children's schools and alert them to the problem soon.

Biopsy results will take about 2 weeks to come through. When the biopsy is done, ask the staff for an approximate date when the results will be with the doctor. CT scan results should be through about the same time.

The next consultant appointment should be very close to that time frame. Get the clinic to confirm an appointment once you have some idea of the biopsy result date.

Best wishes to you both - keep in touch.
