Crying or Very sad Question My mother was diagnosed with adenocarcenoma december of 03' she passed away december 6th 04'. My question is simple.......... my mother and i lived in different cities and she kept her issues to herself. i did not know much about it........still don't. but all i want to know is statistically speaking, what is the ratio of survival?

Hello

Sorry about your loss. Lung cancer can be cured if caught early, and prognosis depends largely on how disseminated the disease is. If it is too advanced for surgery, the prognosis is not very good, maybe a couple of years on average.

I agree, the prognosis depends on the stage of the disease.

There are three important factors for prognosis of non-small cell lung cancers (adenocarcinoma is one type of NSCLC): stage, weight loss, and performance status.

For patients with stage I disease and can have surgery, the 5 year survival is between 50-70%; for stage II, overall surv rate is about 30-50%; for stage III is between 10-15%; and stage IV 5%.

Of course a pt's prognosis is more complex than just these numbers, other factors like type of treatment and whether or not the pt can tolerate adjuvant treatment esp. chemotherapy are also important.
