Hi, My name is Dave,
I was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer (12/01/06)
What i want to know is if anyone has had surgery before they were staged?
My surgeon is going to do the operation Esophageal resection (esophagectomy) 12/19/06 but every site i have been on says that they have been staged before they went any further, I'm worried that my Dr. is rushing things.
I also have not seen if anyone else has had pain in their back like i have had, the pain is worse than the not being able to swallow. Dr. says it's the cancer pushing a nerve, has anyone else had this happen? If all go well i will be back to let you all know how things went.

Dave

Dave, staging of esophageal cancer is essential to make sure that surgery is the correct treatment option. The tests check that you have no disease outside of an area that can safely be removed. So it is usual to have a scan to check all of the organs within your chest and abdomen to look for any spread of the disease. This may be a CT scan or PET scan depending on availability. Some units may also do a bone scan, obviously to check the bones, and an endoscopic ultrasound scan to see how deep the tumour is within the esophagus and to identify whether any lymph glands are affected surrounding the tumour. It is becoming increasingly common to have chemotherapy prior to surgery for patients who have lymph glands affected but no sign of distant spread. Esophagectomy in a healthy individual carries a mortality risk of around 5% with complications occurring in around 15-20% of patients. It is essential therefore that those patients who are not going to benefit from surgery are identified before putting them through this major operation.
