Hello,

I'm happy that I found this forum. I live overseas. A member of our English-speaking church has a brain tumor and has just returned from participation in a trial in the US that was not successful. The members of our congregation want to help her husband care for this women (43 years old). The last time we saw her, last July, she was still able to talk and get around, although her left side has been paralyzed for about 1 1/2 years now. (We have only known this member since she was diagnosed and already had major symptoms.). In September, she was still able to communicate by e-mail.

Now she is only able to communicate in monosyllables. She is still able to use one hand. Walking is very difficult.

I would be grateful for any practical tips you might have. I spent 3 months at my father's side last year as he lost a lengthy battle to cancer. I am not afraid of what may confront us as we try to help this friend and her family. However, I do not know much about brain tumors. Our national association for brain tumors is sending me an information packet with cards that we can use to at least find out if she has some kind of needs. Is there any way to communicate on a higher level? She doesn't appear to be confused. Should we encourage her to use her good hand to try to write or punch a keyboard? Or will that make her even more frustrated?

Thanks in advance for any tips you may have.

Karen

Hello,

I just lost my dad to brain cancer... today we had thanksgiving without him. Something that will take some time getting used to.

But we live on, since that is what my dad would want us to do.

This site was very helpful to understand the changes and know when it's time for help. We had hospice come in and they were very helpful.

I don't know what your friend has - my dad had GBM - stage 4 and lived for 11 months. But htis will help guide you if that times come near
