My dad has stopped smoking this newyears as his resolution. Since he stopped he has gained a significant amount of weight over the 7 or so months since he had quit. But now he went to the doctors and they think he has a kind of cancer forming on his arm. The Doctors from Manitoba where I live are so slow to respond and take action. I'm kind of worried and I'd like him to get help quick because every child would like to see their dad, see them get married and have children. Like the smoking commercials that show what smokers will loose the chance to see. I don't want my dad to die. The doctors are taking so long and next week he might be going to Toronto for more "TESTS". He has taken so MANY test already. I have no idea how much he did take. I feel so helpless. I don't know what to do to enforce some health action towards my dad's condition. Does anyone have tips? Advice, and please don't respond with "You can't do nothing". Thanks :'(

Hi Jer...

That's great that your dad has quit smoking. That can only help him out in many, many ways!

Do the doctors think he has skin cancer?? Basal and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin are usually very treatable. So is melanoma when it is caught early. Has you dad said anything about what kind of cancer they think he has? Have they biopsied it yet?? Once a biopsy is complete they will know what kind of cancer it is (if it is cancer), determine if it is cofined to the immediate area or if it has spread to other parts of his body, and then can make a treatment plan. I don't know much about the medical system in Canada, but I hope that they give your dad quick and thorough care.

What can you do? You're right, some of it is out of your hands and out of your control. Once you know what kind of cancer your dad has (again, if it is cancer) you can help him out by doing some research on the internet. I really believe that being fully informed enables cancer patients to take an active role in their treatment, which in turn gives them a sense of control.

Try to stay calm until you know what you're dealing with. I don't know what your relationship with your dad is like, but being a listener (if he wants to talk), go appts with him -- take notes for him, and take care of yourself during this stressful time. These are the things I think of that you can do!! Already you've come to this forum for a sort of online support group!! There are many such groups on the web.

I hope some of these thoughts/ideas are helpful to you!! Please let us know how you and your dad are doing!

He has taken a biopsy and the results is cancer well thats what he said cause the doctors said that. I'm not really informed about all the details cause they know I'm just a kid. I just want to search this whole world for great doctors who can do the job before its to late. I wish so much that I could just become a doctor and heal my dad from this pain. I'd spend all my money just for him to get well. I don't even know what stage of cancer my dad is in? Early or Late I have no idea. But I hate it when he says hes going to die soon. I want him to think positive so he can get through this. Yes I've come to this forum for any comforting support cause family members just live each day without any notice of this. Thats why I'm telling you this stuff. I don't think he has skin cancer cause I've read in the encyclopedia that skin cancer looks like a really dark red spot. But I have no idea. Argh Life is far from perfect. Stress in this house I think caused this to happen to him. Crying or Very sad
