Think of the luxury and privacy awaiting in his own room...

Hi Jenny
Nothing like a good grouch to make one feel better! Progress is being made, but, as you report, in baby steps. I can already see Larry installed in a new 4th floor room, raring to get home. I've been playing nurse to Tim, he's slipped a disk and been poorly for the last 9 days - and Tim doesn't do poorly very well - he most certainly bites!
Your wedding anniversay celebrations actually were ok you know. Larry is getting better and will be well again - isn't that the best anniversay present in the world? Love & hugs and prayers, jan & tim xx

Dear Both

Progress may be slow, but remeber the story of the hare and the tortoise! Baby steps quickly get bigger. Hope the day has been good.

Monday 24th 9pm

Well the day just got better and better. He walked, he talked, laughed and smiled. The treach pipe has been ‘stoppered with a valve so he can talk croakerly and is breathing through his nose and mouth. I took him his slippers so he shuffled across the ward a couple times and later in the day did some balance exercises by his bed. He sat up for 9 hours, watched telly and had visitors.

Mr Patel is planning on getting the treach pipe out on Wednesday (a bit of extra caution). All the antibiotics have now been ceased. So with the exception of the feed-line and the odd bottle of paracetamol nothing is going in. The chest drain is likely to stay in situ for another 2-3 weeks but huge progress has been made in the last few days.

I’m hoping he’ll have another good night sleep (as this clearly makes such a difference). More news tomorrow (meerkat status officially down graded and eating/sleeping are my reward)

Love to all – such good news - XX

I feel like I'm at the races and the two thoroughbreds on which I bet have made the turn for the home stretch and they are way in the lead. You go get 'em, Larry and Jennifer.
Great News.
Love,
Cousin Cheryl

Dear Jenny and Larry,

So pleased to read the good news. Please remember, both of you, that rest is very important. Don't rush.

Love and hugs,

Val

Tuesday 25th 9pm

An interesting and somewhat mixed day. Larry had another lousy nights sleep – it may sound odd but he is too ‘well’ to handle the noise and commotion of ITU – he how needs rest and recovery. Since they have taken him off virtually everything other than regular blood samples he is pretty much left alone (yes helped to get in and out of bed, passed things he wants). Dr Patel intends to take the treach pipe out tomorrow and I am hoping that Mr H will see the benefits of moving Larry upstairs.

I rocked in at around 10.30 and Larry was begging me to help him get off to sleep – well there was no chance. Half a dozen nurses chatting, people coming in and out every 2 mins (the door to ITU bangs like a cannon), every monitoring device bleeping at any given opportunity, phones going, medical staff doing rounds (pharmacists, phyisos, registrars, visiting specialist, etc). You’d have a better chance of a few hours shut-eye at the ‘last night of the proms’!

This evening he was in much better spirits (having napped for about an hour). He is fine, using his Ipaq and keyboard, talking work (financials), debating with doctors the finer art of inserting a canular (from the pin-cushioned patients’ point of view)! I left him firing from both barrels.

I am hoping to hear from Mr H later (his schedules and call back rate would make even the most sedate of show producers run screaming onto Park Lane to beat passing cars with branches doing John Cleese impressions).

All is moving along at a pace. Happy and relaxed. More news tomorrow. xx
