My mum was diagnosed with non-small cell cancer last summer. She responded well to initial chemo and we thought she would be fine for a while. However, all of a sudden it seems as if tumor growth is exploding, with more tumors in the liver, lynphnodes, etc. They are trying chemo again but it is making her so sick and she ended up in the hospital because her blood works were so bad/fevers.

My question is: Is it painful to die from lung cancer? Right now she feels no pain, but will that change? It won't cause you to suffocate right? What actually kills a person with lung cancer? I read that most people with terminal lung cancer die from other things, what are those things? I can't find answers to my questions anywhere and I am so scared that she will suffer. Can anyone tell me what your experience is?

Also, no one will tell us how long she has left. I know it depends on the person but what is your experience?

Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable?

I would appreciate any advice.

Hi Alma,

My mom was diagnosed with NSCLC last summer, which had already spread to the liver and bones. Eight months after diagnosis and after 3 cycles of chemo, her lung tumor is better, but her liver tumors are worse and she probably has a lymph nodes metastasis.

I don't know how somebody dies from lung cancer. I know that nowadays doctors can really help a patient in order not to suffer at the very end.

I can just tell you that in my mom's case, it is the liver metastasis that will bring her life to an end. Maybe that's why doctors are never sure about what will happen next. Every case and every patient is different. It's not easy to tell.

About the liver and lymph nodes metastasis - my mom is at home now, taking strong painkillers (morphine) and feeling pretty good, when she is not sleeping. Doctors do not think that she will suffer at the very end. She will probably just sleep...

Best wishes,

Mandy
