Here is my story...

My grandmother recently passed away, at age 76, after contracting a virus while undergoing chemotherapy for Acute Leukemia. Earlier in her life, she was able to survive a tough fight with Breast Cancer.

Beginning in 1984, at age 29, my mother began her first battle with Breast Cancer. She fought through and survived two additional bouts with Breast Cancer since then. Three years ago, at age 47, my mother was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, and had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments to keep the disease at bay. Unfortunately, the drugs that helped to slow the Ovarian Cancer were the cause of her Acute Leukemia diagnosis in January 2006. After three weeks of heavy chemotherapy in the hospital, my mother's body lost the battle with the Leukemia treatment. Although my mother is no longer physically with us, her spirit is still as vibrant and alive as it ever was.

Personally living with and seeing close family members and friends struggle with some of the diseases listed on this site, I feel that keeping these causes top-of-mind may help expedite cures and increase support. We all have seen how certain causes get the attention and support they deserve during their respective awareness months, but as that month passes, society shifts its focus onto the next cause. This got me wondering why these important causes only get one month of each year to raise awareness, support, and research funding. Why can't society keep these causes top-of-mind throughout the entire year? ... And the idea behind 365 Aware was born.

Please join me in my attempt to increase awareness of these causes (especially cancer). I hope you find the material on http://www.365aware.org informative, useful, and eye-opening. Please use and share The Calculator to see just how many people are affected by certain diseases and issues. Also, help spread 365 Aware's message by participating in the Pass It On ribbon campaign.

Thank you,
Ryan
