Hello,

My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer almost 2 months ago. We will be finding out if the pill works for her next monday. What i was wondering is if it was safe for her to take melotonin and psk mushroom extract while she is on the pill. My main concern is that it will affect the signal that the pill is sending out and it wont be effective for my mother.

Please help,
Tony

Tony,

I think I've tried to do searches on this subject before. It is difficult to find any meaningful information on the subject.

I did do a drug interaction check on Tarceva and melatonin, and found no interactions.

If I find anything more concrete, I'll post it.

Tony,

It is very important to choose the right psk or reishi mushroom extract as some have been known to add prescription drugs as ingredient without labeling them properly. I would suggest you do some research to ensure a reishi product with the purest extraction methods and highest quality manufacturing. Finally, the content of Polysaccharide is crucial for the effective therapeutic values it can deliver to the patient. The higher percentage of Polysaccharide the better.
As far as interactions, the best source would be to ask the treating physician with information on the content of the reishi product you want to purchase.
Good luck to you and your mother.

PubMed article on Cedars-Sinai Medical Center findings - Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi) causes apoptosis in leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma cells. This announcement was just published last week Jan. 16 2006:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=16423392&query_hl=6&itool=pubmed_docsum

Hope this relevant article would help. Also do a search on PubMEd http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search&DB=pubmed on Ganoderma or reishi. There are also good sources from reishi essence web site. Please be careful on choosing the quality of the ganoderma product. I have acquaintances and relatives that were treated with ganoderma with very positive results. email me if you need to know the source of their ganoderma product. I can inquire from them.

Try this link, and keep an open mind. Doctors can't do everything. In fact, they can hardly do anything. You are much more free to make a cure than a medical doctor.

Alternative medicine integration with standard chemotherapy is an under-researched area. All treatments should be done with the consultation of your medical team. Any kind of herbs should be treated like any FDA approved chemotherapy. Remember many chemotherapies are derived from herbs. So the risks are many and benenfits possible. Worse case scenario is you try both and neither work because they were interfering with each other, which can happen. Worse yet is that a serious side effects results from the combination. New chemotherapy combinations are always tried carefully and usually under a research protocol to address these types of concerns. Any biological agent whether considered chemo or an herb should be handled with caution.

A reasonable approach is to try the Tarceva and if it doesn't work, then try the alternative medicines. Again, I strongly recommended consultation with the medical team regarding any treatment plans.
