Hi Leo or anyone else...can you help me put this in plain English. Basically I know it says I have Pre-Melanoma..but can you give more insight into this pathology report? Should I be doing anything else besides going back for a wider excision?

Lentiginous compund dysplasitc nevus with severe atypia of the intraepidermal component, extending to within 1mm of the peripheral specimen.

Focal dermal regression (what does this mean...is this bad?)

Multiple levels examined..

Re-excision is recommended with clinically indicated margins.

Clinical: atypical nevus

Hello,

That is really what it is. There is nothing else you should be doing other than getting a wider excision. Talk to your doctor, but you should also have frequent whole skin exams periodically.

best regards,
Leo

Atypia means abnormal, not yet malignant. I don't like the choice of words, pre-melanoma. No one can know for sure if atypical cells will indeed become cancerous. Basically, the pathology is saying you have abnormal cell growth and the best treatment is to remove JUST IN CASE it becomes something bad. Nothing to worry about. I had stage O melanoma, which indeed contained malignant cells. Far more than atypia. You're smart to have gone in to see a professional. Get rid of that thing and be happy. But don't bake in the sun and wear your sunblock. Good luck!
