I am sure others will "chime" in, but are two quick words of wisdom. I will add more as I think of them, but these on on top of my mind:
1. Start metamucil on day one.
2. Don't use any Tabasco Sauce on anything. _________________ Don B

Hi
Make sure the anti nausea meds you get are taken on time and make sure hubby takes them even if he is not feeling sick. This is very important in the few days after chemo is given. After 3 or 4 days the nausea should subside. He may get ulcers in his mouth and his hair may fall out and these were the worst side effects that I had. Be wary of the effects of the cortisone which are the tablets he takes for 5 days after he has the chemo, they play havoc with your emotions causing euphoria when taking them followed by depression when you stop. The depression is short lasting and not everyone gets it. His appetite for good food ie green vegetables fruit etc, may go off but just let him eat what he can tolerate. The chemo affects your taste and foods tastes very strange, but at the same time the cortisone gives you a big appetite, just let him eat what he likes. R CHOP affects the immune system so keep sick people away from him as his ability to fight infection will be compromised.
Just out of interest how did they stage your Hubby's lymphoma and what type is it? Also is your Hubby having R CHOP 21 or R CHOP 14 ?
You can read my story for more info, the link is at the bottom of this post in my Sig. Single dad ran a diary on this board you can read that as well and joepet had a running commentary on his treatment which is also a good source of info.
I noted that you mentioned elsewhere about your Husbands lack of symptoms and you wondered wether this was a good sign. Yes it is a very good sign it means he will be staged #a rather than #b. For instance I was diagnosed as 2a due to lack of symptoms.
Good luck and don't worry at the end of this Hubby will more than likely be in remission, the trick is staying in remission !
As always we are here if you need us. _________________ Age 52

My hubby had a big growth in his chest cavity and coulnd't sleep unless he was upright for a few nights. He's been coughing (we thought it was just allergies) coughing on and off for years. He has NHL. It's in a couple of lymph notes but not below the chest. Doc hasn't staged it out. but he said it was slow growing but tissue sample morphed into a few fast growing cells. so he is doing the R CHOP for 21 day cycle...maybe 6 cycles. He's been taking pepsidid and tomorrow is the first day not on steriods. He has slight change in his GI tract...but not much to talk about. We're worrying about what to expect each day and we try to keep notes and see if the next cycle will be similiar. Wondering which days are usually the days with the most fatuge. He's somehow trying to plan his work schedule and life. We heard possible day 7-14 have more fatigue? Thanks so very very much. Will keep away from the tobasco sauce and hope the pepsid as a preventive will help. Also have you heard a green apple can help with stomach issues?
Also, how many days can you take Atavan without getting addicted? Also, his read and shoulders have been redder than usual these last couple of days. |

Hi
If you are worried about the Ativan you could always get something else. The nausea usually only becomes a problem for the few days directly after chemo, by day 4 or 5 its usually gone and the antinausea meds are not required, at least that was the case with me.
The mass in his chest should shrink quickly and he should start to feel pretty good soon. Fatigue only became a problem for me near the end of my treatment after cycle 5 but it was pretty bad.
All in all I found the whole treatment a lot better than I expected, I was prepared for the worst and was very surprised at how easy I had it. _________________ Age 52

My first round went real easy so I was less cautious during my second round. I love Tabasco Sauce and was quite liberal with it on my Sunday morning omlette. I paid for it. Don't let the constipation get a hold. When they say you will get constipated, THEY MEAN IT!! I started the metamucil right away rather than wait until I needed it.
Dealing with the "ups and downs" of the prednisone is my biggest problem...especially at the end of the week. I look for simple things to do: go to the pool and talk with friends; crossword puzzle; mow the lawn (if you have the energy); ride a bike (I like a bit of exercise); once a friend took me boating. Watch out driving during these times. I opted for my truck rather than the motorcycle. I am retired, so I have some luxury.
Drink lots of liquids but never venture far from a rest room.
Anything else? I can't think of anything. Good luck...it is not too bad. _________________ Don B

Hey I'm just about to have my last of six cycles...
what the other guys said about watching the spicy stuff is important and do use the anti-nausea meds the first 5 days.
Ginger pills can help with any upset past that.
You can read the adventure here so far.....

I found splitting the steroids 4 hours apart instead of 2 at once stopped the "off the walls" aspect.
But damn there is a lot of energy and then a crash.
Good luck _________________ Age 61
