My husband has had tonsils removed and 62 nodes in neck. He did radiation from sept 15th to Oct 24th. He is healing now before another pet scan can be done. As of a few weeks ago, i thought everything was going good, In the last few weeks he is having problems swallowing food agaain and is very sore in his gums, jaws! He is due to go to the dr in feb for scans and check to see if radiation got was was left after the surgery, but now i am concerned something is going on again. Can anyone tell me if this is an after effect of all the treatment of maybe he needs to see dr sooner then feb 3rd?? He had squamous cell carcinoma, advanced stage( they would not give me a number in advanced) in tonsil, and nodes in neck!! had tonsils removed Aug 4th, rest of tonsil, cancer cells in mouth, and nodes in neck removed on Aug 12th. Started radiation on Sept 15 and ended radiation on Oct 24th!!

Hi lynnedbird. I cannot answer your question. It does sound like waiting until Feb 3rd is not appropriate. Call his doctor's office and ask them what they think he should do.

You and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you!!!
I did call his dr. He is seeing ENT in our town today just to see if maybe some of his radiation sores got infected!! They want to check the swelling in his face and his throat to see if maybe after effect of radiation. If it is then he will wait til feb to see his oncology ENT, if they think he needs to now then we will go next week to Mayo again!!!

My husband had a pet scan on friday and it looked GREAT!!! No cancer!! The pain is caused from an ulcer on the back of his mouth/throat from the radiation, they think probably from scratching the new tissue and it may have gotten infection and now is large and very sore. It is about the size of half dollar and at base of tongue. no wonder it hurts. they gave him some mouth washes for pain and antibiotics. if not better in 2 weeks he needs to go to dr again and go into a hyper barrack chamber to heal???? I don't know anything about this!! Also if not better in few weeks they will do biopsy to check for anything. other than the little dot from the ulcer in mouth, THE PET SCAN WAS CLEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
