|

| Hi there. My name is Debbie. My darling and precious grandson Trae was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia less than 2 weeks ago. I care for Trae full time during the week, while his single mother works. This whole thing has devistated Trae's mother and his auntie and grand parents (me and my hubby). But we are going to pull together and so what we have to do, to help Trae get well again, eventually. Is there anyone out there with a young child going through this? I'd love to hear from other moms, grandparents, caregivers; who daily care for their sick children. I can use all the support I can get! Debbie |

Hi Debbie. I am so very sorry about Trae's cancer. I know a lot about adult ALL since my father had it but know hardly anything about ALL in children. I know we have some parents here who have had children with cancer but not sure they will find your post. I suggest that you to a search through our Childhood Cancer Forum for ALL, Leukemia, etceteras and see if you can find anyone to chat with about Trae and his needs.
You and Trae are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

Hi Debbie,
I am sorry for you grandson and all the pain your family must be going thru. My son was diagnosed with ALL at age of 4; he is now 6 and has 7 more months of treatment to go. A diagnosis of cancer in a child is a nightmare for any parent, I can not imagine for a single mom. All the support you can give her will impact in your grandson's recovery. As awful as the side effects of the medicines may sound, believe on them, I remember that’s what another parent of a little girl told me in the hospital when my son was just diagnosed. The first six months of treatment are brutal and it is important that you are there for him, since he won’t be able to attend school or go many places to not to compromise the immune system. I believe that a good attitude is important to flight cancer and to get strong. Also, and because western doctors just focus on killing the cancer and not the side effects of the chemo medicine, I would search in your area for an oncologist nutritionist to help your grandchild cope with the side effects and prevent the cancer from coming back. There are a lot of good supplements out there, but you need professional advice to make sure the supplements do not interfere with the treatment. I am married but I am a working mother; fortunately a had family coming from Spain to stay with my son at home for over 4 months while he was going thru the worst of the treatment, that was a big help to me. Also, it is a big help having an oncologist nutritionist, making me feel safer about my child’s future and his well being. He is now in first grade and keeping with his environment as any other child, although he has been anemic since he started treatment. My son prays almost very night for all the sick children; we will have a special mention on our prayers tonight for your grandson.
