Hi pbj11
No not really...it never snows on the mainland apart from in the australian alps and then only on the highest peaks. The average temp in my part of the world in the middle of winter is 15.3 C or just over 59. F and we are in the cold part. Darwin is in the tropics and is almost a constant 33.C _________________ Age 53

| Hmmm.... Is it pricey to live in Australia? I'm curious. Think I need to start looking around for another home. |

Wow Chemoman!!!!
Thanks for all the wonderful links. I've looked at some, but am glad they are here so I can look at my leisure.
I didn't realize that the housing bubble hasn't burst down under. You can hardly give homes away here and people are taking terrible hits on prices if they bought anytime in the past several years in most markets.
I'm going to enjoy doing a "tourist" view of your country and see all the different areas. I suspect Australia has been a pretty big secret to outsiders until the past 10-20 years.
Thanks again! Something good for me to do on my long nights.

Hi pbj11
Not only has the housing bubble not burst we haven't even had a technical recession here Not that its due to good governance but more like good luck. Something has to hit the fan sooner or later . _________________ Age 53

Well, your country didn't have its interest rates kept artificially low like ours did after 9/11 to keep us from going into the dumps then. It also probably wasn't giving out mortgages to people who couldn't afford them. There used to be a rule of thumb formula here on what income would qualify you to buy a house. That went out the window sometime after we purchased our second house I guess. We had years of build-up here to create the "perfect storm" for this pretty little recession. I still remember questioning my husband, post 9/11 for years on why the Fed was keeping the interest rates so darn low and that this wouldn't be good in the end. It wasn't.
We have to sit it out and weather the storm. Gonna be a doozie. How is your unemployment rate down there? Has that been affected at all? _________________ Husband diagnosed with NSCLC Stage IV. (Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer) Fought & lived 2 1/2 years with multiple lines of treatment.

Hi pbj11
its just over 5% and a lot better than all predicited. The Government still reckons its going over 6% next year. Fulltime employment dropped pretty dramatically but employers have been smart enough to reduce hours rather than lay people off. The main reason for this was a huge shortage of labour just before the GFC hit and employers have not forgotten how hard it was to get workers at that time.
We have had 2 interest rate rises in the last 2 month .25% each time. More are predicted. _________________ Age 53

The Fed set the interest rate around 0%. (That's not what consumers pay though!!) Mortgage rates for a 30 year fixed can be had at 4.65% Yow!! Makes me want to take another mortgage out on my house at that rate ---- NOT.
Unemployment is 10.2%. _________________ Husband diagnosed with NSCLC Stage IV. (Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer) Fought & lived 2 1/2 years with multiple lines of treatment.

Christmas in the Sun.... what a great music clip that is.
Perth, Western Australia is a wonderful sunny place to live. The cost of living is cheaper than in Darwin or Melbourne or Sydney in my opinion. The housing prices continue to rise in the 'good' suburbs which is really surprising in this GFC but as Chemoman says while we appear to have had little fallout from this global crisis, something has got to give in my view.
I hope you all have sunshine in your hearts this Christmas and every other day of the year. I think of you all often. I just can't believe it has been ten months since John left me. Love and hugs to you all. have a magical Christmas filled with love.
