My cousin just informed me that my favorite web site now has a Twitter account. At the risk of sounding like a technologically backwards fool (too late?), can anybody explain what Twitter is exactly? I do know it's a form of information sharing, but after that I'm a bit lost.

Twitter as a type of social network where people answer the question: "What are you doing now?" The limit is you only have 140 character. Of course, including this forum, use Twitter for information sharing rather than strictly to answer that question. If you sign up for it, add thecancerforums and JimHawkins54 to those you are following. Many famous people, including President Obama, use it. Twitter also allows you to share pictures if you like.

HI

i just dumped my twitter account. I had pages of japanese tweets and I couldnt get rid of them. I found I ended up with lots of spam as well. You can set your phone to post your tweets. Also when you join up you have to give the password to your email account which goes against the grain with me.

Its basically glorified texting IMHO, but each to his own.

I get around the email problem by giving them a dummy yahoo account which I never read. As for the unwanted tweets, I only get tweets from those people or groups that I have elected to follow. The phone number is also optional. Most of the time, I am only receiving tweets from my son Smile But that is just my experience. with it.

ChemoMan, when you first signed up, you remember getting pages of "recommended friends"? Did you un-select them? If you did not, you probably had a "friend" that you were following who had a friend who was posting to foreign language tweets Wink

Hi...
I am also stalked, to say the least how do we get rid of the unwanted?
Jim you are an expert on these computers but we are not all so good as you! You get everywhere, Bless you...I think you should give twitter classes!
There are so many communicating sites now, how are we to know which is the best and the safest?

I must agree the same as you, i also prefer face book for contact. Easy to down load photos, even for an idiot like me. Easy to get around the site...and of course better for communication. Orkut is also another okay site that is simple to use!

All the best Koik

I have facebook as well but until recently rarely posted anything on it. I still do not go there very often. I use a little program called TweetDeck. Using it, I can post to any of my three Twitter account and to my Facebook too. I can receive Tweets if they are sent to JimHawkins54 or posted on Facebook. It is a very handy program since I only need to login once and can stay logged in all the time.

Oh, I also have a MySpace account but I can't remember when I last logged on to it. I really to not use any of the social networking sites as much as my daughter and others her age do. They post almost every hour Rolling Eyes

Sorry for the late reply! Thanks for the information, I was really surprised (and pleased!) by all the responses. While Twitter still confuses me a bit (there is so much garbage being posted) I did get my cousin to help set me up for my favorite site. We'll see how well this goes...
