Hi all,
I have my father's history in my sig.
His prostate is quite enlarged, roughly 8cm x 6cm. He has been in a lot of pain, which they are trying (somewhat unsuccessfully) to control with morphine.
Despite having two Turps in November, it would appear that his prostate keeps closing, and they keep needing to put a catheter in.
He was recently having some bleeding once in a while when the catheter was out, some clots coming out, etc.
When they put the most recent catheter in a few of days ago, he's had a large amount of blood in his urine bag.
The oncologist did tell him that the cancer can create small blood vessels that can bleed...
Could the catheter being pushed in cause this much bleeding??
It's going on 4 days now of heavy bleeding and daily trips to the ER to get the catheter flushed as it keeps getting blocked (blood clots I guess)... _________________ Father 65 y/o at diagnosis November 2009

From what I know, the catheter by itself should not cause bleeding like you describe. But I'm not a doctor. I wouldn't hazard a guess as to the source of the blood other than to say I would be very surprised if the catheter is the culprit. Many men have to self-cath multiple times a day just to urinate, and they don't suffer bleeding like that.
Hopefully your father is seeing a good urologist in addition to the ER docs and oncologist?
Best wishes. _________________ Replicant

Hi Roadman, - It sounds like your Dad has had significant trauma to the Prostate over the last few weeks. The repeated need for the catheter, PROBABLY, has more to do with the formation of scar tissue, than blood clots, although I can't be sure of this.
The excessive bleeding is not usual and I wonder if your Dad is on any blood thinning medications like Coumadin, a regular daily Aspirin regimen or any possible "natural" supplements that may be thin the blood. If he is, the Urologist should immediately be made aware. Good luck! - John@newPCa.org
