My aunt has been diagnosed with stomach cancer earlier this month. She had a whole lot of tests, from blood, biopsy, ultrasound scan, chest x-ray and CT scan.

Age: 54

Here are the reports for ultrasound and CT:

Ultrasound scan report:
Features of linitis. Thickened stomach wall with regional enlarged nodes. Trace of ascites noted.
Liver normal. No focal lesion. Size and morphology normal.
GB. Size normal. No stone detected. Bile ducts not dilated.
Pancreas normal. No swelling.
Both kidneys normal. No stone or hydronephrosis. Ureters not dilated. Uretro-vesical junctions normal. Bladder normal.

CT Scan (abdomen and pelvis) report:
There is marked concentric bowel wall thickening of the stomach (body and antrum). Appearances are in keeping with malignancy. ? linitis plastica ? lympoma. A hiatus hernia is also noted.
There is a moderate ascites. There is also an omental mass and mesenteric soft tissue standing.
Bilateral mild pleural effusions are present.
The liver, GB, CBD, pancreas, spleen and both kidneys appear normal.
There is no para aortic lymphadenopathy and no pelvic mass.
Impression:
Most probably a gastric primary with omental/mesenteric metastatic disease.

I want to know what stage it is and what are her chances... She's starting chemo today.
Please help, one of the doc gave her only 3 months to live while others have said chemo may help her live longer. We are scared about what can happen when she will start chemo today.

She's vomiting everything she takes, even water. She's been having glucose and other things via iv for a few days. Sad

Thank you.

Hi Ruby. I am very sorry about your Aunt's stomach cancer. I am not sure how stomach cancers are staged so I cannot help you with that. Maybe someone else can. However, I would only use information I find here or anywhere else on the Internet as a source of further questions to ask her own medical team; they are the only ones who can officially tell you what stage it is.

Some of the things that go into staging any cancer are size of the tumor and how far it has spread. There are a few cancers that also take into account you different the cancer cell look from normal ones. I am not sure if this is the case with stomach cancers.

You and your aunt are in my thoughts and prayers.

Ruby,

So sorry is just words, you are in a tough position, trying to help a very
desperate and that feeling of not being able to make it right, to help your
aunt. Its horrible to watchsomeone we love suffer and ultimately leave us
very awful.

Did your Aunt have any symptoms prior to diagnosis, did she ever have any "stomach problems" or stomach tests, prior to her dx?

I know digestive cancers, are very rapid, (pancreatic, colon, stomach) once they are diagnosed, because they are already causing symptoms
when found (most of the time) I do believe though that stomach
cancer is not that common, but thats just an opinion?

It saddens me that there are tests out there, and I feel they SHOULD
be part of an anual physical, but because of costs that will never happen.

Ruby, sorry this is so long but for you, when you get older you DO want
to make having an endoscopy something that is part of your yearly exam
because ( if this is a blood relative) this cancer is now in your gene pool.

Has anybody sought a second opinion, dont know if you can travel??

I hope your strength guides you,
Denise
